Project Lightning: ADNOC HVDC Interconnectors in the United Arab Emirates
HVDC Converters and High Voltage Facilities to supply two Oil & Gas industrial complexes
SAMSUNG C&T has awarded to IDOM the Basic and Detailed Engineering of the Convertors Packages for the Landmark HVDC Lightning Project in United Arab Emirates. The project is being developed by the two state owned companies, ADNOC and TAQA, and will be the first of this kind of HVDC submarine cable projects in the MENA area.
The two undersea interconnectors, 140 and 124 km, will supply electricity from the mainland TRANSCO grid to the two ADNOC oil & gas complexes in the DAS and ZAKUM islands.
The use of direct current will drastically reduce the carbon footprint of two large industrial complexes in the Persian Gulf
The project means to reduce dramatically the ADNOC carbon footprint in both facilities, replacing the current gas-based supply for a cleaner and sustainable energy source, and it is expected to star operations by 2025.
With this new contract, IDOM reinforces its position in the design of HVDC converter installations and is committed to fully achieving the overall client and the project objectives and to contribute to a better and sustainable energy use.
